It is important in interior design to have a good understanding of materials and the qualities they possess. Many different materials have completely different characteristics, uses or symbolism, depending on what these are it can totally change what type of design or situation they can be used in. I have decided to look more in-depth at the qualities, characteristics, uses or symbolism of different metals. Metal is mainly known to be used in technology and mechanical things this means that it had to be a strong and durable material, certain metals depending on their thickness or temperature can be malleable meaning they can be bent and shaped for different uses. to me metal has very masculine features because it is a cold, tough, mechanical type of material and these traits are usually associated with masculinity. I had a look at some old aluminum I had lying around and created a sculpture that attempted to replicate these traits to give me a better understanding of this specific material and how these characteristics can be shown in an abstract way. I used old aluminum cans to try to replicate the sharp, masculine characteristics that metal has, the circle formation symbolizes how malleable and bendy it can be and shows that it can sometimes be molded into a range of different shapes.
